Pompeys Pillar MT ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Pompeys Pillar MT hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Pompeys Pillar MT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Pompeys Pillar MT hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Montana or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Pompeys Pillar MT outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Pompeys Pillar home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Pompeys Pillar MT area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Pompeys Pillar MT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Pompeys Pillar MT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Montana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Pompeys Pillar MT residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pompeys Pillar MT area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Pompeys Pillar National Monument

Pompeys Pillar National Monument is a rock formation located in south central Montana, United States. Designated a National Monument on January 17, 2001, and managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, it consists of only 51 acres (21 ha), making it one of the smallest National Monuments in the U.S. It was previously designated a National Historic Landmark on July 25, 1965.[2] The new Pompeys Pillar Interpretive Center opened in 2006. Exhibits in the 5,700-square foot center relate the journey of Captain William Clark and his detachment, including Sacagawea and her son Pomp, down the Yellowstone River Valley in 1806.

The pillar itself stands 150 feet (45 m) above the Yellowstone River and consists of sandstone from the late Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation, 75 – 66 million years ago. The base of the pillar is approximately 1 acre (0.4 ha).

The pillar features an abundance of Native American petroglyphs, as well as the signature of William Clark, co-leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Clark's inscription is the only remaining physical evidence found along the route that was followed by the expedition.
