Sonographer Work Description

Ravalli MT ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Ravalli MT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Ravalli MT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Ravalli MT clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Montana or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Ravalli MTAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Ravalli MT hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Ravalli home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Ravalli MT ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Ravalli MT area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ravalli MT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have associations with Ravalli MT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Ravalli medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Montana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Ravalli MT residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ravalli MT area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Ravalli County, Montana

Ravalli County is part of a north/south mountain valley bordered by the Sapphire Mountains on the East and the Bitterroot Mountains on the West. It is often referred to as the Bitterroot Valley, which is named for the Bitterroot Flower. The county is on the Pacific Ocean side of the Continental Divide, which follows the Idaho-Montana border from Wyoming until Ravalli County. Here, it turns east into Montana, between Chief Joseph Pass and Lost Trail Pass, and follows the Ravalli County-Beaverhead County border.

Ravalli County was once home to the Bitterroot Salish tribe. The tribe was first encountered in 1805 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which noted their friendly nature. The Catholic Church took an interest in creating a mission in the area, and in 1841, Stevensville was founded. In 1891, the Salish tribe moved to the current Flathead Reservation under the Treaty of Hellgate.

In 1877, Chief Joseph and his Wallowa band of Nez Perce passed through Ravalli County in their attempt to escape confinement to a reservation; they were captured en route to Canada just south of Havre.
