Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Alvo NE ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Alvo NE clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Alvo NE ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Alvo NE hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Nebraska or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Alvo NEAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Alvo NE outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Alvo home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Alvo NE ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Alvo NE area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Alvo NE health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Alvo NE clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Alvo healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Nebraska healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Alvo NE residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Alvo NE area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Other preferred talents include technical aptitude, the ability to keep collected when faced with an anxious or angry patient and the ability to converse clearly and compassionately.
