Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Bennington NE ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bennington NE hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Bennington NE ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Bennington NE clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Nebraska or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Bennington NEAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bennington NE hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Bennington home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Bennington NE ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Bennington NE area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Bennington NE health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Bennington NE hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Bennington healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Nebraska healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Bennington NE home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bennington NE area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
