Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Craig NE ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Craig NE clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Craig NE ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Craig NE clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Nebraska or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Craig NEAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Craig NE outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Craig home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are considering, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Craig NE ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Craig NE area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Craig NE health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Craig NE hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Craig health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Nebraska healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Craig NE residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Craig NE area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
