Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Greenwood NE ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Greenwood NE clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Greenwood NE ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Greenwood NE clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Nebraska or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Greenwood NEAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Greenwood NE outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Greenwood home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Greenwood NE ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Greenwood NE area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Greenwood NE health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Greenwood NE clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Greenwood healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Nebraska healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Greenwood NE residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Greenwood NE area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
