Sonogram Tech Work Description

Kimball NE ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Kimball NE hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Kimball NE ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Kimball NE hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Nebraska or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Kimball NEAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Kimball NE outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Kimball home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Kimball NE ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Kimball NE area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Kimball NE employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Kimball NE hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Kimball medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Nebraska healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Kimball NE residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kimball NE area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
