Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Uehling NE ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Uehling NE clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Uehling NE ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Uehling NE hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Nebraska or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Uehling NEAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Uehling NE hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Uehling home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Uehling NE ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Uehling NE area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Uehling NE employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Uehling NE hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Uehling health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Nebraska healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Uehling NE residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Uehling NE area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
