One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Gerlach NV ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Gerlach NV area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Gerlach NV employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Gerlach NV clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Gerlach medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Nevada healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Gerlach NV residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Gerlach NV area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
