Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Sanbornville NH ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Sanbornville NH clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Sanbornville NH clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Hampshire or whichever state you elect to practice in.

So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Sanbornville NH outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Sanbornville home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography school you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Sanbornville NH ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Sanbornville NH area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Sanbornville NH health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Sanbornville NH clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Sanbornville medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Hampshire healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Sanbornville NH home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Sanbornville NH area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
