Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Atco NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Atco NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Atco NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Atco NJ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Atco NJAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Atco NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Atco home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography college you are reviewing, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Atco NJ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Atco NJ area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Atco NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Atco NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Atco medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Atco NJ home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Atco NJ area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Atco, New Jersey

Atco is an unincorporated community in Waterford Township in Camden County, New Jersey, United States.[5] It is part of the Philadelphia-Camden metropolitan area, located 16 miles (26 km) southeast of Camden. Though generally considered part of Waterford Township, a small section of the southern edge of Atco is located in Winslow Township.[6][7]

Atco is the home of the Atco Raceway, and served as the location for the movie Eddie and the Cruisers. In 2005, an episode of Viva La Bam was shot at the raceway. The area is served as United States Postal Service ZIP Code 08004.[2]

The area gets its name from the Atlantic Transport Company, though other possible derivations have been offered, one of which is from the Indian word for "Land of many deer."[8] The Atlantic Transport Company of West Virginia placed a major order with the New York Shipbuilding Corporation of Camden, New Jersey for four big ships launched 1902-3, which may have something to do with the choice of the name Atco at this time.
