Sonographer Occupation Description

Barrington NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Barrington NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Barrington NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Barrington NJ hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Barrington NJAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Barrington NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Barrington home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Barrington NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Barrington NJ area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Barrington NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Barrington NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Barrington medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Barrington NJ home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Barrington NJ area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
