Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Bridgewater NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Bridgewater NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Bridgewater NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Bridgewater NJ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Bridgewater NJAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Bridgewater NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Bridgewater home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Bridgewater NJ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bridgewater NJ area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bridgewater NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Bridgewater NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Bridgewater health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Bridgewater NJ residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bridgewater NJ area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
