Sonographer Work Summary

Florham Park NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Florham Park NJ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Florham Park NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Florham Park NJ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Florham Park NJAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Florham Park NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Florham Park home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Florham Park NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Florham Park NJ area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Florham Park NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Florham Park NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Florham Park healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Florham Park NJ home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Florham Park NJ area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
