Freehold NJ sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Freehold NJ, it’s time to start the procedure of selecting a college. First, you must find the right program that will provide the proper instruction to become a skilled professional. And because some states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program so that you can assess and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one begin? Most potential students will begin by searching for colleges that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location must be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other important factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internships. These and additional qualifiers will be discussed more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s discuss what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online training programs that are available.

Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Freehold NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Freehold NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Freehold NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Freehold NJ clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Freehold NJAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Freehold NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Freehold home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Freehold NJ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Freehold NJ area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Freehold NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Freehold NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Freehold medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Freehold NJ residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Freehold NJ area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
