Sonographer Work Description

Hainesport NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Hainesport NJ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Hainesport NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Hainesport NJ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you elect to practice in.

student attending online sonography class in Hainesport NJAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Hainesport NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Hainesport home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Hainesport NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hainesport NJ area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Hainesport NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have partnerships with Hainesport NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Hainesport healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Hainesport NJ residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hainesport NJ area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
