Sonogram Tech Work Description

Linden NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Linden NJ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Linden NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Linden NJ hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Linden NJAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Linden NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Linden home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Linden NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Linden NJ area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Linden NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Linden NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Linden health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Linden NJ residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Linden NJ area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Linden, New Jersey

Linden is a city in southeastern Union County, New Jersey, United States. It is part of the New York Metropolitan Area, located about 13 miles (21 km) southwest of Manhattan and bordering Staten Island, a borough of New York City, across the Arthur Kill. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city's population was 40,499,[11][12][13] reflecting an increase of 1,105 (+2.8%) from the 39,394 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 2,693 (+7.3%) from the 36,701 counted in the 1990 Census.[20]

Linden was originally formed as a township on March 4, 1861 from portions of Elizabeth, Rahway and Union Township. Portions of the township were taken to form Cranford (March 14, 1871), Linden Borough (March 30, 1882) and Roselle (December 20, 1894). Linden was incorporated as a city by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on January 1, 1925, replacing both Linden Township and Linden Borough, based on the results of a referendum held on November 8, 1923.[21] The city's name derives from linden trees brought from Germany.[22]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city had a total area of 11.407 square miles (29.545 km2), including 10.675 square miles (27.648 km2) of land and 0.732 square miles (1.897 km2) of water (6.42%).[1][2]
