Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Navesink NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Navesink NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Navesink NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Navesink NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Navesink NJAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Navesink NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Navesink home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Navesink NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Navesink NJ area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Navesink NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Navesink NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Navesink healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Navesink NJ residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Navesink NJ area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
