Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Oceanport NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Oceanport NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Oceanport NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Oceanport NJ hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Oceanport NJAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Oceanport NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Oceanport home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Oceanport NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Oceanport NJ area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Oceanport NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Oceanport NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Oceanport health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Oceanport NJ home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Oceanport NJ area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
