Sonogram Tech Job Description

Stanhope NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Stanhope NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Stanhope NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Stanhope home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Stanhope NJ area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Stanhope NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Stanhope NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Stanhope health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Stanhope NJ home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Stanhope NJ area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
