How to Choose the Best Ultrasound Tech School near Summit New Jersey

Summit NJ sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Summit NJ, the next step is to begin the process of picking a school. To begin with, you must find the right program that will provide the proper education to become a qualified professional. And since some states do require that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each school in order to evaluate and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? Most students will begin by looking for colleges that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost must be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other important factors also. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and other qualifications will be covered more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Summit NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Summit NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Summit NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Summit NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Summit NJAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Summit NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Summit home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Summit NJ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Summit NJ area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Summit NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with Summit NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Summit healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Summit NJ residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Summit NJ area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
