Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Berino NM ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Berino NM hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Berino NM ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Berino NM hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Mexico or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Berino NMAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Berino NM outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Berino home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Berino NM ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Berino NM area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Berino NM health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Berino NM hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Berino health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Mexico healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Berino NM residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Berino NM area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

NM 226's western terminus is north of Chamberino at the road's junction with NM 28. The road's eastern terminus is near Berino at the road's junction with NM 478.
