Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Chacon NM ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Chacon NM clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Chacon NM ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Chacon NM clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in New Mexico or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Chacon NMAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Chacon NM outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Chacon home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Chacon NM ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Chacon NM area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Chacon NM employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Chacon NM clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Chacon health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Mexico healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Chacon NM home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Chacon NM area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
