Sonographer Work Description

Glorieta NM ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Glorieta NM hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Glorieta NM ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Glorieta NM clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Mexico or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Glorieta NMAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Glorieta NM hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Glorieta home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Glorieta NM ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Glorieta NM area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Glorieta NM health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Glorieta NM hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Glorieta healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Mexico healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Glorieta NM home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Glorieta NM area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
