Sonographer Occupation Summary

Hope NM ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Hope NM clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Hope NM ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Hope NM clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Mexico or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Hope NMAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Hope NM hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Hope home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are looking at, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Hope NM ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hope NM area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Hope NM employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Hope NM hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Hope healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Mexico healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Hope NM home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Hope NM area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
