Sonographer Occupation Description

Penasco NM ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Penasco NM hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Penasco NM ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Penasco NM hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Mexico or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Penasco NMAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Penasco NM hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Penasco home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Penasco NM ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Penasco NM area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Penasco NM employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Penasco NM hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Penasco medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Mexico healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Penasco NM home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Penasco NM area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
