Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Bernhards Bay NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bernhards Bay NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Bernhards Bay NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Bernhards Bay NY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in New York or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Bernhards Bay NYAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Bernhards Bay NY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Bernhards Bay home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Bernhards Bay NY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Bernhards Bay NY area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bernhards Bay NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have associations with Bernhards Bay NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Bernhards Bay healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Bernhards Bay NY residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bernhards Bay NY area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
