Sonographer Work Summary

Buchanan NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Buchanan NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Buchanan NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Buchanan NY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Buchanan NYAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Buchanan NY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Buchanan home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Buchanan NY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Buchanan NY area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Buchanan NY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Buchanan NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Buchanan health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Buchanan NY residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Buchanan NY area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    James Buchanan

James Buchanan Jr. (/bjuːˈkænən/; April 23, 1791 – June 1, 1868) was an American politician who served as the 15th president of the United States (1857–1861), serving immediately prior to the American Civil War. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the 17th United States secretary of state and had served in the Senate and House of Representatives before becoming president.

Buchanan was born in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania, to parents of Ulster Scots descent. He became a prominent lawyer in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and won election to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Federalist. In 1820, Buchanan won election to the United States House of Representatives, eventually becoming aligned with Andrew Jackson's Democratic Party. After serving as Jackson's Minister to Russia, Buchanan won election as a senator from Pennsylvania. In 1845, he accepted appointment as President James K. Polk's Secretary of State. A major contender for his party's presidential nomination throughout the 1840s and 1850s, Buchanan finally won his party's nomination in 1856, defeating incumbent President Pierce and Senator Stephen A. Douglas at the 1856 Democratic National Convention. Buchanan and his running mate, John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky, defeated Republican John C. Frémont and Know-Nothing Millard Fillmore to win the 1856 election.

Shortly after his election, Buchanan lobbied the Supreme Court to issue a broad ruling in Dred Scott v. Sandford, which he fully endorsed as president. He allied with the South in attempting to gain the admission of Kansas to the Union as a slave state under the Lecompton Constitution. In the process, he alienated both Republican abolitionists and Northern Democrats, most of whom supported the principle of popular sovereignty in determining a new state's slaveholding status. He was often called a "doughface", a Northerner with Southern sympathies, and he fought with Douglas, the leader of the popular sovereignty faction, for control of the Democratic Party. In the midst of the growing sectional crisis, the Panic of 1857 struck the nation. Buchanan indicated in his 1857 inaugural address that he would not seek a second term, and he kept his word and did not run for re-election in the 1860 presidential election. Buchanan supported the North during the Civil War and publicly defended himself against charges that he was responsible for the war. He died in 1868 at age 77, and was also the last president to be born in the eighteenth century. He is the only president to remain a lifelong bachelor.
