Sonographer Occupation Description

Centerport NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Centerport NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Centerport NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Centerport NY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in New York or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Centerport NYAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Centerport NY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Centerport home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Centerport NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Centerport NY area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Centerport NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Centerport NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Centerport medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Centerport NY home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Centerport NY area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Centerport, New York

Centerport is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, New York, United States, on the notably affluent North Shore of Long Island. Formerly known as Little Cow Harbor in about 1700, as Centreport in 1836, and as Centerport after 1895, the name refers to its geographic position midway between the east and west boundaries of the town of Huntington.[1]

As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP population was 5,508.[2] It is located in the town of Huntington. Huntington and its surrounding hamlets mark the east end of Long Island's renowned "Gold Coast", the name deriving from the traditional wealth and gentility associated with the area. The association dates back to the early twentieth century in which many affluent families built their homes along the north shore of the island. In Centerport, an example of this is the estate of William Kissam Vanderbilt II, otherwise known as Eagles Nest.

Centerport is highly residential, characterized by winding driveways and beachfront hills. As is common among the many beachfront locations on Long Island's North Shore, Centerport has developed a large boating and sailing culture. An important part of this culture is the Centerport Yacht Club, which was founded in 1947 and has served as the social and athletic focal point for the boating community in both Centerport and its surrounding areas. The yacht club sponsors a variety of racing fleets and regattas every year generally beginning in the late spring and ending mid-autumn.
