Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Cornwall NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Cornwall NY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Cornwall NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Cornwall NY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in New York or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Cornwall NYAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Cornwall NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Cornwall home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Cornwall NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Cornwall NY area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Cornwall NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Cornwall NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Cornwall health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Cornwall NY residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cornwall NY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Cornwall, New York

Cornwall is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was at 12,646. Cornwall is located about 50 miles north of New York City in the Hudson River Valley on the western shore of the Hudson River. Cornwall has become a bedroom community for area towns and cities including New York City. Commuter rail service to North Jersey and New York City is available via the Salisbury Mills–Cornwall train station, operated by NJ Transit in behalf of Metro-North Railroad that is part of Metro-North's "West of the Hudson" service. The town is located less than an hour from the George Washington Bridge with access to major commuter routes like the New York State Thruway and the Palisades Parkway.

Cornwall's Main Street includes gift shops, taverns, restaurants, coffeehouses, yoga studios and boutiques. Government offices, churches, parks, the riverfront, and St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, a part of the Montefiore Health System, are situated within walking distance of downtown. The town is a designated Tree City.

When the explorer Henry Hudson visited the region in 1609 the land was occupied by the Waoraneck Indians. In 1685 a colony of twenty-five Scottish families settled around the mouth of the Moodna Creek, led by the soldier Major Patrick McGregor and his brother-in-law, David Toiseach, the laird of Monzievaird.[4][5] In the ensuing 50 years, English and Scotch families came to the fertile tableland above the river meadows naming it "new Cornwall" because of the marked similarity to the County of Cornwall, England, It is believed that the hamlet of Canterbury was the site of this settlement. The first recorded Town meeting was held in April 1765. In 1788, Orange county was subdivided into numerous townships, thus producing the town of "New Cornwall." The town's name was subsequently changed from "New Cornwall" to "Cornwall" in 1797.[6] The late 1800s were the heyday of Cornwall's fame. It became a summer resort because of the natural beauty of the river, its mountain vistas, scenic trails, fresh country air and convenience to New York City via riverboat or railroad.[7]
