Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Craryville NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Craryville NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Craryville NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Craryville NY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Craryville NYAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Craryville NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Craryville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Craryville NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Craryville NY area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Craryville NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Craryville NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Craryville healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Craryville NY residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Craryville NY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Craryville station

Craryville was a former NYCRR train station that served the residents of the Town of Hillsdale in Columbia County, New York. It is currently located along New York State Route 23 in Craryville, New York.[1]

The New York and Harlem Railroad built their main line through Crayville between 1849 and 1852 leading to Chatham. It was also intended to be the original northern terminus of the Dutchess and Columbia Railroad. The station catered to a local community that had a substantial industry during the era of the NY&H, and later when the New York Central Railroad (NYCRR) acquired the railroad. The line provided both passenger and freight train services, and even included a high-level freight loading dock.

However, with the demise of the Harlem Division passenger service in 1972, the station was closed for passengers and provided freight only services. Craryville provided commercial freight services until 1976, when the tracks north of Wassaic were dismantled. The Harlem Valley Rail Trail Association plans to extend the trail along the right-of-way in front of the site of the former station.[2]
