They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in East Bethany NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure

  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

East Bethany NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through East Bethany NY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in New York or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in East Bethany NYAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local East Bethany NY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your East Bethany home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask East Bethany NY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the East Bethany NY area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of East Bethany NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have relationships with East Bethany NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the East Bethany medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their East Bethany NY home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the East Bethany NY area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
