Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Ellisburg NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Ellisburg NY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Ellisburg NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Ellisburg NY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Ellisburg NYAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Ellisburg NY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Ellisburg home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography school you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Ellisburg NY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Ellisburg NY area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ellisburg NY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have associations with Ellisburg NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Ellisburg healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Ellisburg NY home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ellisburg NY area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
