Sonographer Job Summary

Hilton NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Hilton NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Hilton NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Hilton NY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in New York or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Hilton NYAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Hilton NY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Hilton home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Hilton NY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Hilton NY area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Hilton NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Hilton NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Hilton health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Hilton NY residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hilton NY area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
