Sonographer Job Description

Leon NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Leon NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Leon NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Leon NY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Leon NYAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Leon NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Leon home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Leon NY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Leon NY area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Leon NY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Leon NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Leon healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Leon NY home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Leon NY area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
