Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Middle Island NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Middle Island NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Middle Island NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Middle Island NY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in New York or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Middle Island NYAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Middle Island NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Middle Island home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer school you are considering, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Middle Island NY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Middle Island NY area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Middle Island NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Middle Island NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Middle Island healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Middle Island NY residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Middle Island NY area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
