Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Montrose NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Montrose NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Montrose NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Montrose NY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in New York or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Montrose NYAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Montrose NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Montrose home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Montrose NY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Montrose NY area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Montrose NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Montrose NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Montrose health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Montrose NY residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Montrose NY area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
