They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Saint Albans NY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them

  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Saint Albans NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Saint Albans NY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Saint Albans NYAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Saint Albans NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Saint Albans home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Saint Albans NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Saint Albans NY area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Saint Albans NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Saint Albans NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Saint Albans health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Saint Albans NY residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Saint Albans NY area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

    Saint Alban

Saint Alban (/ˈɔːlbən, ˈæl-/; Latin: Albanus) is venerated as the first-recorded British Christian martyr,[1] for which reason he is considered to be the British protomartyr. Along with fellow Saints Julius and Aaron, Alban is one of three named martyrs recorded at an early date from Roman Britain ("Amphibalus" was the name given much later to the priest he was said to have been protecting). He is traditionally believed to have been beheaded in the Roman city of Verulamium (modern St Albans) sometime during the 3rd or 4th century and his cult has been celebrated there since ancient times.

According to the most elaborate version of the tale found in Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People, Alban lived in Verulamium, sometime during the 3rd or 4th century (see dating controversy below), but some authors, on the basis that Gildas says he crosses the Thames before his martyrdom, place his residence and martyrdom in London.[2] He lived in Roman Britain, but little is known about his religious affiliations, socioeconomic status or citizenship. Sometime in the 3rd or 4th century, Christians began to suffer "cruel persecution."[3] Alban met a Christian priest fleeing from "persecutors" and sheltered him in his house for a number of days. The priest (who later came to be called Amphibalus, meaning "cloak" in Latin) prayed and "kept watch" day and night, and Alban was so impressed with the priest's faith and piety that he found himself emulating the priest and soon converted to Christianity. Eventually it came to the ears of an unnamed "impious prince" that Alban was sheltering the priest. The prince gave orders for Roman soldiers to make a strict search of Alban's house. As they came to seize the priest, Alban put on the priest's cloak and clothing and presented himself to the soldiers in place of his guest.[3]

Alban was brought before the judge, who just then happened to be standing at the altar, offering sacrifices to "devils" (Bede's reference to pagan gods).[3] When the judge heard that Alban had offered himself up in place of the priest, he became enraged that Alban would shelter a person who "despised and blasphemed the gods,"[3] and as Alban had given himself up in the Christian's place, Alban was sentenced to endure all the punishments that were to be inflicted upon the priest unless he would comply with the pagan rites of their religion. Alban refused, and declared, "I worship and adore the true and living God who created all things." (The words are still used in prayer at St Alban's Abbey).
