Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Sherman NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Sherman NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Sherman NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Sherman NY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in New York or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Sherman NYAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Sherman NY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Sherman home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Sherman NY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Sherman NY area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Sherman NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have associations with Sherman NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Sherman medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Sherman NY residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Sherman NY area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    William Tecumseh Sherman

William Tecumseh Sherman (February 8, 1820 – February 14, 1891) was an American soldier, businessman, educator, and author. He served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–65), for which he received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the scorched earth policies he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States.[2]

Sherman was born into a prominent political family. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1840 and was stationed in California. He married Ellen Ewing Sherman and together they raised eight children. Sherman's wife and children were all devout Catholics, while Sherman was originally a member of the faith but later left it. In 1859, he gained a position as superintendent of the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy. Living in the South, Sherman grew to respect Southern culture and sympathize with the practice of Southern slavery, although he opposed secession.

Sherman began his Civil War career serving with distinction in the First Battle of Bull Run before being transferred to the Western Theater. He served in Kentucky in 1861, where he acted overly paranoid, exaggerating the presence of spies in the region and providing what seemed to be alarmingly high estimates of the number of troops needed to pacify Kentucky. He was granted leave, and fell into depression. Sherman returned to serve under General Ulysses S. Grant in the winter of 1862 during the battles of forts Henry and Donelson. Before the Battle of Shiloh, Sherman commanded a division. Failing to make proper preparations for a Confederate offensive, his men were surprised and overrun. He later rallied his division and helped drive the Confederates back. Sherman later served in the Siege of Corinth and commanded the XV Corps during the Vicksburg Campaign, which led to the fall of the critical Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River. After Grant was promoted to command of all Western armies, Sherman took over the Army of the Tennessee and led it during the Chattanooga Campaign, which culminated with the routing of the Confederate armies in the state of Tennessee.
