You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Stockton NY area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Stockton NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Stockton NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Stockton healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Stockton NY residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Stockton NY area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
