Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Thornwood NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Thornwood NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Thornwood NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Thornwood NY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in New York or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Thornwood NYAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Thornwood NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Thornwood home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Thornwood NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Thornwood NY area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Thornwood NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Thornwood NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Thornwood medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Thornwood NY home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Thornwood NY area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Thornwood, New York

Thornwood is a hamlet (unincorporated community), census-designated place (CDP), and postal designation (with zip code 10594) in the town of Mount Pleasant in Westchester County, New York. The population was 3,759 at the 2010 census.[1]

In 1891, Lewis Smadback started a very successful development at what is now Thornwood. The village of Sherman Park was incorporated in 1906 and the name was changed to Hillside in 1909. The village was dissolved in 1914, when Thornwood took its current name and became a hamlet within the Town of Mount Pleasant. It is possible that Thornwood is a derivative of "Hawthorne's Woods," since Hawthorne is an adjacent hamlet.

Thornwood once had a large and thriving Westchester marble quarry near its heart, the intersection of Route 141 and Kensico Road (known as Four Corners). Dating back to 1845, the quarry supplied white marble which helped build St. Patrick's Cathedral (hence the name of Marble Avenue which runs through the hamlet). The quarry pit was filled in during the mid-1980s, and the Town Center shopping mall was constructed over it.
