Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Waterford NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Waterford NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Waterford NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Waterford NY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in New York or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Waterford NYAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Waterford NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Waterford home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Waterford NY area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Waterford NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Waterford NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Waterford healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Waterford NY residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Waterford NY area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
