Sonographer Job Summary

White Lake NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in White Lake NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

White Lake NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through White Lake NY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in New York or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in White Lake NYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local White Lake NY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your White Lake home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask White Lake NY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the White Lake NY area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of White Lake NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with White Lake NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the White Lake health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their White Lake NY home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the White Lake NY area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
