Sonogram Tech Work Description

Brasstown NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Brasstown NC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Brasstown NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Brasstown NC clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in North Carolina or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Brasstown NC hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Brasstown home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Brasstown NC ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Brasstown NC area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Brasstown NC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Brasstown NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Brasstown medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Brasstown NC residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Brasstown NC area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
