Sonogram Tech Work Description

Conover NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Conover NC hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Conover NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Conover NC clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in North Carolina or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Conover NCAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Conover NC hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Conover home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Conover NC ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Conover NC area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Conover NC health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Conover NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Conover health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Conover NC residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Conover NC area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
