Sonographer Work Description

Dudley NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Dudley NC clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Dudley NC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Dudley NC hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in North Carolina or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Dudley NCAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Dudley NC hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Dudley home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Dudley NC ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Dudley NC area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Dudley NC health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Dudley NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Dudley healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Dudley NC residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dudley NC area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Dudley, North Carolina

Dudley is an unincorporated community in Wayne County, North Carolina, United States, about 9 miles south of Goldsboro. Part of this area includes the Brogden CDP. Dudley is included in the Goldsboro, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Another town named Dudley originally existed several miles north from its current location. It was founded by Labon Lewis, the son of a Revolutionary soldier, named for his deceased brother Dudley Lewis. On January 13, 1840, a post office was established for this town. This office's name was later changed to Everettsville, which was moved to a new location in 1849 and was closed in 1866.

The second and present town bearing the name was set up around 1836-1840 as a camp for the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad. This time, however, it was named for Governor Edward B. Dudley, the railroad's founder. In the years in which the village grew, it gained a depot and a passenger station. Its post office was established on February 3, 1850.
