Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Faith NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Faith NC hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Faith NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Faith NC hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in North Carolina or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Faith NCAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Faith NC outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Faith home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Faith NC ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Faith NC area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Faith NC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Faith NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Faith medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Faith NC residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Faith NC area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
