Sonographer Job Description

Forest City NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Forest City NC hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Forest City NC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Forest City NC hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in North Carolina or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Forest City NCAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Forest City NC outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Forest City home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are looking at, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Forest City NC ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Forest City NC area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Forest City NC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Forest City NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Forest City medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Forest City NC home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Forest City NC area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
