An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Harrisburg NC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in North Carolina or whatever state you elect to practice in.

One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Harrisburg NC area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Harrisburg NC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Harrisburg NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Harrisburg medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Harrisburg NC residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Harrisburg NC area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
