Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Kure Beach NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Kure Beach NC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Kure Beach NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Kure Beach NC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in North Carolina or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Kure Beach NCAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Kure Beach NC outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Kure Beach home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Kure Beach NC ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Kure Beach NC area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Kure Beach NC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Kure Beach NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Kure Beach healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Kure Beach NC residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Kure Beach NC area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.93% of the population.
